Few days ago, Apple pulled out AppGratis from the Apple store, the move was buzzed and criticized by many, even a French minister got involved trying to push EU for tighter regulation.
Apple removed AppGratis from the Apple store because it says it has violated a clause in the iOS developer guidelines that prohibits apps from mimicking the official App Store.
In reality, the reason might have been more serious than that, after all why did they approve it to just remove it now … the real reason might be that AppGratis was manipulating Apple store Apps ranking!
AppGratis offered paid apps for FREE, and they are getting paid by app developers to do that, why? simple, the more apps are downloaded the higher they rank in the Apple store, that’s the whole idea!
So developers were offering their apps for free and paying AppGratis in order to rise in the apple store ranking, that untill Apple was aware how AppGratis was operating.
AppGratis was giving companies and developers an estimate Apple store ranking of their App based on how much the company was willing to pay on AppGratis distribution, below a screenshot of a leaked document:
