the NSA infiltrated 50 000 companies in a large scale Industrial Espionage !
Through spyware and malware, the NSA infected more than 50,000 computer networks worldwide in what only can be described as a large scale industrial espionage.
Many would have defended the email monitoring and phone calls monitoring as necessary to avoid terrorist attacks, some have defended monitoring heads of states and politicians as standard spying activity done by every country, but how could anyone defend a large scale spying on companies? i don’t think it’s even possible!
Documents revealed by NSA contractor Edward Snowden,
show a 2012 management presentation explaining how the NSA collects information worldwide. In addition, the presentation shows that the intelligence service uses ‘Computer Network Exploitation’ (CNE) in more than 50,000 locations. CNE is the secret infiltration of computer systems achieved by installing malware, malicious software.
One example of a computer network breached was discovered in September 2013 at the Belgium telecom provider Belgacom. Where British intelligence service - GCHQ – has been installing this malicious software in the Belgacom network for years in order to tap their customers’ telephone and data traffic. The Belgacom network was infiltrated by GCHQ through a process of luring employees to a false Linkedin page.
The NSA computer attacks are performed by a special department called TAO that employs more than a thousand hackers. Which installed an estimated 20,000 ‘implants’ as early as 2008 and By mid-2012 this number had more than doubled to 50,000.
These spywares/ implants can be controlled remotely and be turned on and off at will and act as digital ‘sleeper cells’.
The NSA-presentation shows their CNE-operations in many developing countries where the malware is installed can remain active for years without being detected.
According to the Washington Post, the NSA has been carrying out this type of cyber operation since 1998.
